Santo Domingo artisans have been creating heishi (hee shee) beads for over 1,000 years. Heishi beads are discs of shell or stone that have been ground into smooth barrel shapes, then drilled and strung to create beautiful, smooth flexible tubes of stones. The Santo Domingo Pueblo is located near Santa Fe, New Mexico.
